Pepin has so much money, he could care less if his dailies step on somebody's toes.
There was a post on the 'other' forum the other day by the administrator about how well the whole country is run by a few major families. They really are the ones who, to a large extent, pull the strings on what happens and doesn't happen.
I don't know if it was a revelation to him, but it's something I've known for many, many years.

I think any of us that have lived here for many years know that! It definitely makes life easier if you can 'throw' some big names around when needed!

The last few weeks have been quiet up here. I have not heard of any robberies from anyone. My "source" tells me that a some very large "round ups" have been going on with lots of people being "detained, deported or have fled the area". I have noticed fewer people in our area, that did nothing, and our contractor is having a problem finding labor.
But it appears that a an old problem concerning our DR youth is starting to rise. I note the part about "... a way to acquire some assets to show off in society.". I noticed how the DR started changing about 10 years ago with the explosion of people having to have all the toys and bling bling. Wasn't this about the time when cable TV started to become very popular and into just about every home?

Combine that with some areas where people are fed-up with the living, or lack of living conditions brings out frustrations. As far back as I can remember, Licey has always been a leader with demonstrations. Why is that?

Another reason i hate the TV. A lunch hall owner and i were talking about this today. He said that this country has more or less the same culture as the US now. I'm wondering if the new toys and bling are contributing to the docility of the populace much like in the US.

My wife and I have been to Vancouver a few times as tourist, some 20 or so years ago. We were so impressed with how clean the city was as well as no street beggars and everyone courteous. My wife had to go back this last year and reported that she could not believe the difference. Dirty, beggars and all sorts of people that she avoided.

"They are mostly homegrown operations or recruits from immigrant communities. Some gang members come from middle-class families and join up expecting the Hollywood version of criminal life.
"These guys act like rock stars," said Sgt. Kieron McConnell of the British Columbia Integrated Gang Task Force. It's McConnell's job to remove what he calls "the mystique of being a gangster.""
From the article with bolding mine.
