AAAS has been working with animals and people in the Cabarete, Sosua area for years. They have done a wonderful and usually thankless job of rounding up strays to spay/neuter, inoculate and treat for diseases.
They go into the poorer neighborhoods and do the same while educating the people.
This organization not only helps control and helps the animals, it helps in keeping the general public health safer with their work.
At this time they have two Vets from Germany that will be here for 3 weeks with another coming from the U.S. next week.
Volunteers are needed to help round up, wash, transport and just sit with the animals after surgery. Cash donations are always good also.
They are located JUST east of the Coastal Gas Station east of Sosua. Very small sign with Dr. Bobs name on it too that shows the entry road. Phone: 809-571-1167. email: info@aaasosua.com or PM me if you wish.

We had two vets from Germany staying with us this last week. They are now in Samana doing some work at another animal organization. They are due back here in the next couple of days then they return to Germany.
A quote taken from above: MVMA Project Samana is a voluntary veterinary relief effort made twice yearly in Samana, the Dominican Republic. Veterinarians, technicians, students, and others treat animals both large and small. Supported by MVMA, private and corporate donations, and contributions to the Christopher Dillmann, DVM, Memorial Samana Fund
Judy that manages our local AAAS; http://www.aaasosua.com/sosua_dogs_judys.html here in Sosua has said that working with the animals and people has gone very well BUT that no Rabies vaccine could be found on the Island.
Another vet and his wife from Massachusetts arrived the other day with a large bag of Rabies and other drugs so that the program has been able to continue, 50 lbs of donated medications. Even though the Dr. had all the paper work he needed and all in order, customs gave them a difficult time and he ended up slipping someone a large "tip".
We are happy to be able to provide housing and have these people stay with us while they do some very important work. In a couple of days, they too will go to Samana to join other vets from the States to continue helping the animals and people there.
We are also pleased that our new friends are making plans to come back next March to stay with us and do some more much needed work. They normally only come down once a year but will try to make it twice a year now. (I guess my wife and I did good by making them feel at home with us. )
Both these organizations would welcome just about whatever help you would offer.

I was told that American vets come to El Limon, Samaná irregularly but do not know much about their project. Certainly they'll be quite busy but if it could somehow be arranged I'd like to get in contact with them and invite them for a beer on our finca.

Thank you Samanave.
I will pass on your invite and your pm'ed information when I see them this afternoon.
I hope that they have time to meet some fine people (you and your family) and experience your finca.

The vet and his wife that are staying with us normally go straight to Samana with the rest of the U.S. group. This time they decided to stop here in Sosua for a few days to help Judy, AAAS, and see a different part of the D.R.
So we are galloping around our area a little, more like a slow walk in this humidity. They will drive to Samana and join the rest of their group in a couple of days. They told us that they stay at an AI in Samana and get tired of the same food... no matter how hard the AI tries to disguise it.
Perhaps some of your famous wood oven baked bread with that cold beer?
Update: The two German vets that did stay with us and are now in Samana, called us to let us know that they will not have time to come back to Sosua this visit and will leave for Germany from Samana tomorrow. THEY did say that they will be coming back again and will stay with us... as paying guests. We are delighted that our small part in helping the Animals and the people here has helped to make a difference. We will give them a very good deal when they come back.
So that makes 2 volunteer couples in the last two weeks that we have helped to make feel welcome, important and needed. We did so little and have gained much.

Wonderful!!!
Sometimes it seems that no matter what we do here on the island nothing ever changes. This little gesture of goodwill HAS made a difference and will continue to do so for many years to come I'm sure!
