There is a very new restaurant on El Conde, just a few steps from the entrance and Grand's (Paco's) called Pasta Italia. Prices are RD$120-200. The menu is very simple, one page, and in Italian. I had a plate of spaghetti in sauce with parmesean, basil, and some other cheese too, i believe for RD$160. Very delicious. girlzilla had fettuccine bolognesa the first night and penne with this awesome bacon stuff the next night. Meals come with bread. If they don't have the type of pasta on the menu you're looking for, just ask, and they'll make your meal to order. Very good place, great value, nice people. This restaurant has since closed. It was first sold to Dominicans, who jacked the prices up 3x, played some horrible local music loudly all the time, and then it closed shortly thereafter.

If you're looking for Chinese food, look no further. Ironically, this establishment isn't located in Chinatown, but in Gazcue, almost in front of Adrian Tropical. Restaurante Gran Palacio de Jade actually has real, traditional Chinese food like hot pots, dim sum, shark fin soup, and anything else you can imagine that's not on the menu, they will make if they have the ingredients in stock. Prices are very resonable, with the menu ranging from RD$60-RD$500. Some dishes are even served by the pound or can be made special for 1-3 people. The building is shaped like a castle, complete with moat, and upstairs that can be booked for large groups/parties/etc. If anyone wants to get a group of at least eight people for dim sum, please let me know.

I do love Asian food, even more so here, as it's healthier and lighter than Dominican food. There was a Chinese restaurant in Nagua but they closed it. Wasn't overwhelming, but at least an alternative to the 'comedores'...

I have nothing but good things to say about Gran Palacio De Jade.....I have been a regular customer for a while and every chance I get, I pay them a visit.
Not only would they make any dish you want, but they will even go out of their way to make sure you were pleased with your meal.
One day, while eating there, my parked rented car was hit by a moron drunk and the manager did EVERYTHING in his power not to incovenience me.....He asked for the rental agency's phone number and I don't know what in hell he did but within 1 hour I had a new rented car waiting for me at the parking lot!!.

Too many good things to say about this place. Items are very reasonably priced and food is served with a variety of appetizers like kim chi, steamed greens, spicy tofu, steamed vegetables, etc. It's a great Korean restaurant located right off Av. Bolivar/Betancourt. The easiest way to get to it is going west on Bolivar, take the street right before the Burger King on the left side of the road.

I finally found a place in Chinatown that's worth eating at. This place is really awesome and the prices are just right. I asked about dim sum the first time i was there and when i came back that night, they'd just made a fresh batch of it. Twelve dumplings for RD$100. You're not going to get them for that price at Gran Palacio de Jade. I also asked about siew mai (they're like pork dumplings) and they just happened to have those in stock as well. They also made sesame chicken special for me. If it's not on the menu and you know how to describe it (or even better if you know how to say it in Chinese) they'll make it for you. I'm very impressed by this place. Located at: Calle Benito Gonzalez No. 71, second floor. (809) 682-5953

When my friend told me about this today, she pitched it as an "Arabian restaurant", which didn't mean a whole lot to me, since the food in that part of the world is all very similar. It's more interesting to me the particular variety, as each country does it slightly differently and special in their own way. Turns out, it's an Egyptian place. It's only been open for about three weeks, no business cards printed yet, and the guy said it's been packed every night.
It's on Calle Hostos right across from the San Francisco monastery ruins in the Colonial Zone. This is the same location where the son concerts have been taking place recently. There's nothing on the menu more than RD$400. Owner is super nice. Full contact info:

He said that he has a Facebook page (i don't use that site, so i can't confirm) which has pictures of the restaurant on it. Great view. It's on the second story of the building and they have space below as well. There's shisha available as well as a type of Egyptian alcohol. I highly recommend this place.

This restaurant is great in the same way the Italian place that i originally posted was. Nothing on the menu over RD$225. They have sushi, salad, lunch plates (11AM - 3PM), pastries, drinks, cocktails, shots, mixed drinks, entrees, sandwiches, pasta, and pinchos. Last night, i had a chicken pesto sandwich, spicy bacon pasta, and a water, which came to RD$350. The quality of the food is very impressive. Even the decor/atmosphere is nice and simple. They have locally made jewelry and other crafts for sale as well as different musical groups which play some nights. This is not a place to skip!
